I ventured into the city today, braving the freezing cold, to see the astounding Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown. This year is the year of the snake, and my Chinese bank teller, John, tells me that the significance of a snake year is continuity. All of the goodness of last year’s dragon year will continue in a snake year. So there ya have it, according to John. This year’s parade did not disappoint, with rockets being shot off, blowing confetti and parachutes into the air, a good hour before the drums even began. Even Senator Chuck Schumer came out for the festivities!
If you’ve read The Believer’s Daughter, you can probably guess that Chinatown is one of my favorite parts of New York City. In addition to fantastic dim sum, delicious Chinese pastries, the supercool Chinatown Fair Arcade (no longer boasting a fortune-telling chicken), ultrahipster lounges and bars, you can always bet that something exciting is going on in Chinatown.
Happy New Year!
